Nominations (both self-nominations and third-party nominations) of current members are being sought for the following awards in regional studies and related fields:
- Nathaniel Lichfield Recent Master’s Award – this award is for recent Masters graduates who have graduated within the previous year.
- Paul Benneworth PhD Student Award – this award is for registered PhD students who have not yet received their PhD certificate. This name change recognises the enormous contribution of Paul Benneworth to the field of Regional Studies and his strong commitment to supporting students in our subject areas. - RSA Routledge Early Career Award – this award is for early career researchers (defined as being within five years of the date on their PhD certificate or equivalent).
The nominees are expected to have made an original and outstanding contribution to research concerned with the analysis of regions and regional issues. This could include any of multiple methodologies from quantitative to qualitative, the use of thoughtful comparative research, and span boundaries between academia and policy and practice.
To be eligible for nomination, if the submission is not sole authored, a covering letter should be included setting out how the submitted piece of work demonstrates and evidences the nominee’s own intellectual contribution, research interests and trajectory, and research agenda setting.
Nominations should include a fully referenced piece of work in English, which fits the research interests of the Association. Please note that either the nominee or the nominator has to be a current RSA member. If the nominee is selected to receive an award, he/she will need to have an active RSA membership.
The prize for each Award is (in the case the award is assigned to two or more nominees, the prize will be divided equally among the winners):
- A cheque for £500 (c. $660; c. €590);
- A certificate.

The Regional Studies Association is a registered charity that works with researchers and policymakers across all career stages and geographical regions in the field of regional studies and science. We believe that all voices should be heard, and we work hard to ensure our community is an inclusive and diverse environment in which to share and disseminate regional research. Through research grants, knowledge exchange, capacity building events, publications, excellence awards and policy engagement, and together with our membership community, we support regional research, policy and development. Our contribution to research and knowledge exchange leads to evidence informed policymaking and improves people’s opportunities and outcomes via the latest research and through engagement and communication. We welcome donations and legacies that will contribute to the RSA fund now and in years to come.
