Empathetic Leadership in Academia
Five years ago, the network of early and mid career women in regional research was founded by Prof Franziska Sielker (TU Wien, Austria) with the support of the Regional Studies Association at the Early Careers Conference of the RSA in Brighton, UK. Since then a lively online support group has formed and dedicated events have taken place. We are glad to have sustained the group throughout the last few difficult years, and we are delighted to finally come together in person again at the Annual Conference of the RSA in Ljubljana.
We will meet in the afternoon of the first conference day, the Wednesday 14th June between 13:00 and 16:00. Dr Tania Istenič, Assistant Professor at the School of Economics and Business at the University of Ljubljana, will chair the workshop, which will be a mixture of expert input, lively discussions and most importantly, networking. Following the workshop we will celebrate our fifth year in existence with a drinks reception.
The concept of empathetic leadership has seen great popularity amongst business consultancies and news outlets (e.g. here or here). As we begin to see shifts towards more female leaders in politics (EU Presidency; Finland; New Zealand) we also see reports of changed leadership styles in response to crises. This new, allegedly softer approach is often touted as the leadership style of the future. We are happy to have secured Prof Miha Škerlavaj, Vice-dean for research and Professor of Management at the School of Economics and Business at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and adjunct professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at BI Norwegian Business School, Norway as speaker. Miha will share his expertise on postheroic leadership. Together with Dr Tania Istenič, he will facilitate a roundtable discussion on what this could mean in the academic context.
Confirmed discussants:
Assoc Prof Dr Tamara Besednjak Valič, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia,
Prof Jennifer Clark of Ohio State University, USA,
Assoc Prof Dr Lucy Natarajan of UCL, UK,
Prof Marte Solheim of Stavanger University, Norway,
Does this leadership style exist in academia? What difference would empathetic leadership styles make in academic departments? Is empathetic leadership a natural ability or can everyone learn to do it? These are questions that will be explored at this women’s networking session with colleagues at the Regional Studies Association annual event in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
We are looking forward to meeting you and catching up with you!
Dr Camilla Chlebna, Kiel University, Germany
Prof Franziska Sielker, TU Wien, Austria
