Spatial Economic Analysis
The Regional Studies Association and Regional Science Association International – British and Irish Section seek to appoint an Editor-in-Chief to the journal, Spatial Economic Analysis. The current Editor-in-Chief, Professor Paul Elhorst (Groningen), will step down at the end of his second editorial term in 2023.
Spatial Economic Analysis
Spatial Economic Analysis is a pioneering economics journal dedicated to the development of theory and methods in spatial economics, published quarterly by two of the world’s leading learned societies in the analysis of spatial economics, the Regional Studies Association and the British and Irish Section of the Regional Science Association International.
The journal takes spatial economics, regional science and economic geography as its focus, is targeted at international audiences and has achieved an SSCI listing with an impact factor of 2.317 (2021). It is a leading outlet for high quality research from international contributors in the field of spatial economic analysis.

Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief of Spatial Economic Analysis is expected to:
- Continue the development of the journal, particularly by encouraging submissions and special issues from leading researchers in the field to reflect the full scope of the journal.
- Manage the team of co-editors and chair editorial meetings.
- Represent the journal on the Regional Studies Association’s Journals Committee and Board and liaise with the Board of the Regional Science Association International – British and Irish Section.
- Write a preface for twice annual reports on the journal.
- Write editorials for publication in each general issue (not for special issues) and seek and respond to feedback on these from the co-editors.
- Assess new submissions for scope and quality, and send constructive desk reject decisions for out of scope or below quality submissions.
- Assign appropriate manuscripts to handling co-editors for peer review based on expertise.
- Make final decisions on submissions, based on peer review reports and co-editor recommendations.
- Support the peer review process by selecting referees when acting as a handling editor directly.
- Use ScholarOneManuscripts, the online submissions tracking system, to assist in the editorial process.
Under the current arrangements, the Regional Studies Association covers the cost of the employment of an Editorial Assistant. The publisher handles production. It also markets the journal to the Regional Studies Association membership, the Regional Science Association International – British and Irish Section membership and to the journal subscriber base. Spatial Economic Analysis is available as part of a bundle with the RSA journals Regional Studies; Territory, Politics, Governance and Area Development and Policy and also for separate subscription.
Responding to the Call for Expressions of Interest
In making expressions of interest candidates are invited to submit:
- A brief editorial manifesto (not more than 500 words) outlining their intentions for the safeguarding and further development of the academic excellence, relevance and scope of Spatial Economic Analysis;
- An indication of host institution support; and
- A full CV – this may be in summary form but should give enough information to demonstrate embeddedness in the field, e.g., information about networks, conferences attended, relevant publications, professional memberships, etc.
The selection of the new Editor-in-Chief will be made by the Regional Studies Association and Regional Science Association – British and Irish Section in the light of recommendations from the Regional Studies Association’s Journals Committee on which RSAI BIS representatives sit for decisions on Spatial Economic Analysis. The post is for commencement in Spring 2023 to provide overlap with the current Editor-in-Chief.
The successful candidate may wish to join one or both Associations as a member. For clarity non-members may apply. The successful candidate is expected to engage with the Associations and support the journal in these communities.
