Does regionalisation lead to the development of new forms of democratic engagement?
A new blog post by Dr Elodie Fabre discusses her investigation into opportunities for democratic innovation at the regional level. In the last twenty years, developments in regional government across Europe have provided more opportunities for citizen engagement, from voting in regional elections to getting involved in regional parties and regional political organisations. Dr Fabre's research assesses the extent to which the regional institutions of Spain and the UK have brought democracy 'closer to the people', following a comparison of the various engagement opportunities provided by regional legislatures. She suggsts some obstacles to regional divergence and considers the direction for the next stage of her research.
