Individual
If you are not a full-time student, early career researcher or a corporate representative, you can join as an Individual member.
“I joke that I joined the RSA by mistake – I’m from a different disciplinary background, and first met regional studies when a project colleague submitted a paper to an RSA Annual Conference. I’ve never looked back! The RSA gave me a warm welcome and my membership has opened possibilities for research, professional development, collaboration and impact that have changed the course of my academic career. These opportunities have been well above what I have found through the other associations I have joined over the years. The RSA especially stands out for European policy engagement and early career support. I’ve quickly gone from being a stranger to part of a lively interdisciplinary community that I always enjoy engaging with, and I’m proud to now be a Fellow of the RSA.”
Dr Bryonny Goodwin-Hawkins, Countryside and Community Research Institute, University of Gloucestershire.
Early Career
If you have received your PhD* certificate within the last 5 years, you can join as an Early Career member.
“I joined the RSA as a doctoral student and have remained a member since then. RSA is particularly supportive of its student and early career members. Some of the benefits I enjoyed as a student member was the Conference Bursary and help with my research publication. The RSA journal, Regional Science Regional Studies, has a program where student authors are assigned an editor who patiently guides them to improve on their manuscript until it is good enough for publication. That was how I came by my first article as a doctoral student, and for this I am eternally grateful to the editor and the RSA. The RSA team is also very accessible and provides tailor-made support to members. So, for students and early career academics in regional studies broadly defined, you can find no better home than in the RSA. Research today, policy tomorrow, join the RSA.”
Dr Benedict Arko, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana
Student
If you are currently completing your PhD (or Masters) course, you can join as a Student member.
“As a PhD student, you want to learn more about your discipline’s broad areas of study, participate in academic discussions, interact with other students, attend conferences and become a well-informed academician. One can support their academic path at RSA, one of the world’s top learning associations. As a student member of RSA, I have access to RSA journals that offer rigorous academic discussion, participate in various professional development webinars, and write a blog that gives researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers in regional studies a platform to share their research findings. Additionally, a PhD student might benefit from various options such as APC waiver discounts, travel funds, etc. There is no other venue for students to develop and support their academic journeys than the RSA, and skipping the RSA would result in a substantial loss of opportunity.”
Sugam Agarwal, PhD Student, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, India
Emeritus/Retired
If you have retired from full-time work, then you can join as a Retired/Emeritus member.
“It is splendid to have the RSA and its work as a constant light-house in a constantly changing sea. What is most valuable is the constant effort of international members to address practical problems and government authorities in their respective countries.”
Alan Townsend, Emeritus Professor, Durham University, UK
Corporate
If your organisation is actively involved in regional development, research and policies (managing authorities, university departments, institutes, think tanks, consultancies and the like), and there are several people who wish to take advantage of our membership benefits, then you can join as a Corporate member.
