I would like to advertise an opportunity to apply for a funded PhD position at my research group at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, for three-years, to start in October 2025, for outstanding students from a country with diplomatic relations with Japan.
Kyoto University is one of Japan’s two premier universities and is ranked 45th globally by the research-focused Shanghai Rankings.
I invite students to propose a topic related to my current interests and contact me directly at trencher.gregory.2s@kyoto-u.ac.jp
The topics I would be interested in supporting are:
- Energy transitions, fossil-fuel phase out and decarbonisation
- Decarbonisation policies, especially policies focused on downscaling carbon-intensive technologies, systems and practices
- Decarbonization strategies of companies
- Voluntary carbon market (carbon offsets)
- Electric and smart mobility
- Climate obstruction
I study these topics from a socio-technical, innovation systems and interdisciplinary perspective, using mixed qualitative quantitative methods. I do not support single case studies and prefer comparisons, market or national/international-level analyses, or large n-studies.
Interested applicants should send me a brief email of motivation, CV and one or more ideas for a research topic.
I will select one student to take the entrance exam on February 3. During this interview, the applicant will compete for a scholarship covering airfare to Japan, tuition and living expenses. The fellowship monthly stipend is 147,000 JPY per month (tax free). This is enough for most single people to live from.
The application procedure at the graduate school is relatively simple and outlined here: https://www.ges.kyoto-u.ac.jp/ges/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/IEMP_Guideline_Doctor_Winter2024_2.pdf
Please read this document carefully before contacting Gregory Trencher.
