We are seeking a motivated and qualified candidate for a fully-funded PhD scholarship through CSIRO’s Next Generation Graduates Program. The Program is an industry driven, multi-disciplinary graduate training program that aims to equip the candidate with entrepreneurial thinking and skill sets that boost breakthrough innovation in the exciting fields of emerging technologies.
The candidate will be based at James Cook University in Cairns, and work collaboratively with Cairns Regional Council to examine strategic approaches to urban heat mitigation. This project will deploy heat sensors in key neighbourhoods across the city to identify high-risk locations affected by the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The project will integrate population and demographic data and utilise advanced modelling simulations to develop a strategic urban cooling plan, which will be instrumental in informing local policy decisions. In so doing, the research will propose areas for mitigation, ensuring interventions are both effective and equitable.
Research suggests that urban design interventions such as increasing green spaces, enhancing urban albedo and built shade can significantly reduce UHI intensity and improve thermal comfort for residents. This interdisciplinary project will address the complex interactions between urban infrastructure, climate change and community resilience. Candidates with a strong background in environmental science, urban planning, or related fields are encouraged to apply. This scholarship offers highly competitive financial support but also includes specialised training in new technologies and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful research that will shape the future of urban living in Cairns.
The selected PhD candidate will:
*Devise and conduct research relevant to urban heat mitigation in Cairns
*Work closely with JCU supervisors and Cairns Regional Council to refine the research focus within the broader project goals
*Undertake 6 months of placement at Cairns Regional Council as part of research activities, over the course of the PhD
*Take part in CSIRO’s Next Generation cohort building activities around Australia
*Receive a highly competitive stipend
This PhD project will be based at James Cook University under the supervision of A/Prof Lisa Law. The candidate will receive comprehensive support to undertake research activities, including presenting at national and international conferences and collaborating with multidisciplinary experts across the university.
