Dr. Gabe Schwartzman, at the Department of Geography and Sustainability at the University of Tennessee, is recruiting a PhD student as part of an NSF-funded project on the political ecology of carbon forest management in Central Appalachia. This is a 3-year fully funded Graduate Research Assistantship, with a fourth year of funding as a Teaching Assistant provided by the department should the student successful meet expectations.
This project aims to assess how carbon forest offset projects on corporate-owned landholdings in Central Appalachia have affected forestry economies and forest communities. This research is part of a broader project in collaboration with biologists and ecologists at WVU that analyses socio-ecological resilience and forest-based climate solutions in Central Appalachian forests.
The PhD student will be expected to support fieldwork research in qualitative methods across Central Appalachia. The student will have the opportunity to develop research skills in qualitative methods, forest ecology field methods, and support the development of research publications. A successful applicant should be interested in developing an independent doctoral research project that aligns with the funded GRA research on carbon management in Central Appalachia.
Please reach out to Dr. Gabe Schwartzman (gschwar3@utk.edu) with any questions. The deadline for applications is December 15th, 2024.
