To combine the concepts of innovation and global production networks in order to understand the development trajectories of two traditional sectors in Portugal: the wine and cork industries. The objective is to capture the local/regional institutional arrangements that have enabled or constrained their growth in the recent past, while acknowledging that local dynamics are strongly influenced by links with global production networks.
I aim to use the outcomes of my research as a window into the wider issues that have affected the Portuguese economy in recent years and that have led to an extended period of economic stagnation culminating in a political and economic crisis of uncertain consequences.
