Rodrigo Simões Obituary

Dr. Rodrigo Simões passed away on August, 19th in Rio de Janeiro. He was aged 50.
Rodrigo Simões was one of the most inspirational regional economists in Brazil. Born in Belo Horizonte, he was, at the time of his passing, deputy director of Cedeplar, the Centre for Regional Planning and Development at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), and also the president of the Brazilian National Association of Graduate Courses in Urban and Regional Planning.

The Regional Studies Association's open access journal, Regional Studies, Regional Science, has a section specifically devoted to Early Career Papers which focuses on publishing short articles from students and early career researchers to make their research accessible to a wider audience. 

Keith Cowling was one of Europe’s leading industrial economists and a long standing advocate of industrial policy. He was also renowned for being highly critical of the state of contemporary capitalism, believing that its monopolistic tendencies led to recession and stagnation and was prone to abuse of corporate power. He conducted this critique by uniquely combining both neoclassical and heterodox approaches to economics, but with an empirical rigour that gained him the wide respect of the economics profession.
